Heres the Absolute basics:

Indica
Cannabis strains characterized by wide, webbed leaves and short, stocky plant structure. ex: strains originating from Afghanistan, northern India, Lebanon, Pakistan and Turkey.

Sativa
Cannabis strains characterized by long, thin leaves and tall, wide girthed plant structure. ex: strains originating from most of Africa, Jamaica, Nepal, Mexico, and south east Asia.

What he said, and.....
There is really no way of telling which after you buy an unknown herb. The ONLY surefire way to tell is by the high.

If it gives you a body stone and makes you sleepy, then it is most likely an indica.
If it gives you a head high and makes your thoughts go crazy, then its most likely a sativa. Of course it could be a hybrid of the two as well.

There is a 3rd type of Cannabis Strain.

Ruderalis : Short & Dense, much like the Indica. However, very resistant to cold & less potent than the indica or sativa. Some ruderalis MJ ignores light-cycles and flowers on its own time. Lowryder has ruderalis traits that let it "auto-flower" no matter what light cycle. It's probably generations and generations of a mix of Indica + Ruderalis, that finally produced these traits.
