interested in growing

hey everyone. just recently i've taken an interest in growing. but, before i explain my situation, here's the basics.....right now i'm 18 and in high school. I missed one year due to medical problems, and after failing to graduate in 3 years, i have one more year to go (graduating in'06). Anyways, next year i'm only taking 2 classes to get the ...credits i need to graduate, and i figure i'll probably spend a majority of my free time (which i'll have plenty of) working. Since i'm still gonna have time and an income, i was thinking about renting out a small apartment or garage or something, ordering some seeds, and setting it up as a place to grow at. I was just wondering how time consuming this really is and if you think it would be worth the risk of doing. The only hard thing is that i couldn't let my parents find out, but i'm 18 so legally that can be done. if that's too hard, i was gonna try and find a college buddy that lives nearby and lives in an apartment (not dorm) and pay him to let me use a room to grow there. Do you all think that this would be worth the risk or not? I really don't know whether to try it or not, but i really want to.

btw, how much does it cost (usually) to set up lighting and growing accessories when you first start out? a few hundred? a grand?
