OUT! not UP!

Ok I finally get the the idea of everything and how herb grows but now I have a trimming question!!! When do you know when to top your plant in order to make it grow out more than up? I remember from my first grow that I clipped off the top and in it's place two stems grew. When should you start trimming your plant and what makes your plant split into more stems etc... How do you make your plant bushy? By trimming it?

at 3 weeks a light fell on the top of one of my plants and burned the main stem really badly so i cut it off and immediately the nodes that were on each side of the main stem started growing like there was no tomorrow. that was a few days ago and already the newer stems are much much bigger and the plant is wider than it was before. i also made sure to give the plant a little super thrive when i cut it because i heard it helps the plant avoid shock and waste valuable growth time, from what i've seen it's true!! good luck with your plant!!

Post Misconceptions about foliage removal

Hazie, High!
It is rarely beneficial to remove any of the foliage. The leaves are active, healthy factories making the sugars which makes more leaves/buds. The Only reason to remove a fan leaf is if it is dead. Once a plant has reached minimal maturity/nodes, you can Pinch off the very topmost tiniest set of leaves. You have to wait until there is enough stem to allow a clean pinch, or go to the first bit of stem you can find below the next set.
This will temporarily cause lateral growth, but will put most of it's effort into two new top branches. So this can be done when you have 5-7 nodes.
Or you can cut off the top of the plant at a place where the nodes have grown apart, when you have 10+ nodes. Cut just beneath a node, so you leave a 1/2" length of stem above the new top node. Now you will get some impressive lateral growth. One of the topmost branches will assert itself as the 'top', but it will have lots of company. I have preped and cloned those top 4-5 nodes. Even airlayered it once, but cutting was faster and safer for both mother and clone in this particlar situation.
BUT!!! You don't ever have to cut up your babies, yet you can still influence extra growth. The methods are describe here'bouts.
A clone is exactly like it's doner. You can grow a collectable fem, regen, take cuttings, and soon have a forest of colas. That's why!
