24/0 versus 16/8 Question...

Hi(gh) all

I've been frantically browsing this and other forums for the past week or two trying to absorb all your years of experience.... I've noticed a lot of people mention that during veg'ing it's best to use a 24/0 light cycle whilst others reccomend a 16/8 cycle. I'm just wondering if anyone could post the advantages and disadvantages of both methods. I've got some seeds (Northern Lights) in the process of germinating atm and would like to make the most of them as much as possible No doubt I'll make many many other mistakes so I may as well try to cut at least this one out.

I did have another question but it's completely slipped my mind now.. bah.

Any help you can give (on reminding me of my 2nd question or answering my first) would be muchly appreciated!

Its 18/6, not 16/8.

Cuttings are known to like 24/0. Thats fact. Its for rooting. Whether plants do is debatable.

Personally, I don't use the 18/6 schedule until a few days before flowering. I keep my seedlings under 24/0 fluros until they are ready for the Metal Halide, then they go under there 24/0 for about 3 weeks. Then, if I didn't top the plants, I switch it to 18/6 for a week before flowering. But its not necessary.

If I topped the plants, which I always do now that I'm growing hydro, I leave it 24/0. I do this because when I topped the plants I put them under a lot of stress. And when you change the light schedule, you also stress them. I don't want to stress them more then I have to, so I just leave them be if they're topped.

Really, it doesn't matter too much. Some will say the plants need the dark period. But thats just BS because my plants turn out awesome without a dark period in veg.

18/6 here. They seem to like it a lot, so I stick to what works.

Whoops..

The 16/8 was a typo..sorry about that.. Somehow forgot how to divide 24 by 4

Thanks for your comments.. It's all something to consider.. The impression I get from what you've said is that both work quite well. I think that I'll let the delivery date of the HPS light (supposedly monday..bah) and the availability of a timer to be my guide.

Thanks again. Any other tips are always welcome
