male/ female plants???????

This may be a silly question, but is it possible to make sure a plant is female? Or can you turn a male plant into a female one?

I have spent hours researching about telling the difference, I've spent much time studying my outdoor plants trying to tell what they are going to be. I feel kinda stupid because I can't tell what's what. I understand the articles I've read but when I look at my plant.....hmmm.....well I'm just not sure what I'm seeing.
