I an starting my first room in a closet 3x3x7 and cannot afford a carbon fan/filter at this time. What could I use in place until I can get one?

try to get hold of two pc fans and wire them to a phone charger one for intake one for exhaust

Check out the search feature on the site: look up ozone generators, ionizers, ONA gel, DIY carbon filter. There's a great deal of info already started on a number of threads.

Are you most concerned about temperature or smell? There are some pretty easy options, but wasn't sure of what you are trying to accomplish.
