Adjusting pH

How much and of what should I add to a gallon of water to lower my pH. Right now I think its about pH 8-9.5. Any advice anyone?

Remember the lead time as well.

You add some lowering, check the ph and think it hasn't gone down a great deal so you add some more but then when you check it again you find you have over compensated because the previous addition hadn't fully taken effect.

One thing that makes it a bit more difficult is that I am growing in soil for the time being and it seems like adjusting the pH in soil is a wait & see process. This is due to only having the $20 Rapitest pH meter and its effectiveness being limited to testing in soil only. I am looking at getting an Oakton but I am not sure which one to get.
