Some First time growing questions

i picked up a book the other day with the idea that i was going to learn from the book on growing and i have. It says 400 watts should be enough for a 3x3 area, Now assuming all the seeds i have are indica and i get an average yield per plant and everything is successful, how many plants can i get in a 3x3 space and how much will that amount yield? I'm looking at spending $187 on a 400watt +30 for the bulb. Or should i just go to 600watt for $234 + 80 for the bulb

1. how many plants can i get in a 3x3 area assuming they are all indica? standard? scrog? sog?
2. What is the average yield for an indica plant regardless of strain
3.Should i just go to 600 instead or will i be fine with the 400?
4. If i dont get hps at all and i decided to tryout SOG or SCRoG with about 400watts of cfl would that be ok?
5. Which foxfarm blend is good?

in spending the least amount cfl's sound good and that way i get foxfarm organics and some mylar to boot,

Well 400w of cfls will be almost as expensive as getting a 400w ballast and lamp. Home depot sells 42w (ignore the equivilant to incan. lighting spec, only true watts.) cfls at $10/piece, so you would need 10 total and thats $100+tax. These guys sell 200w cfls for $62/piece as well as ballast kits for HPS and MH lamps.

cfl's are fine. the 400watt hps my closest hydroponic shop was selling is 234 + 30 for the bulb. If i go this route i save money and can get the mylar and foxfarm soil and nutes and i'll be set

That's a link to a 400W switchable ballast - you can use it for MH or HPS.

VEODigital is right. Given that you're going to go 400W either way, I'd go for the HID over compact fluorescent - better bang for buck.

Their 600W is only $152: http://cgi.ebay.com/CAP-600-w-HPS-Va...62?refid=store

those FLUOREX lamps I'm always talking about.

Just a note to all that keep PMing: I'm just a customer of that place. I know the owner ‘cuz he lives by me; but, I can't answer questions about shipping or stuff the dude can get – you have to ask him. I invited him here but he doesn't want the risk.

i am getting a 400watt hps on sunday and i am a little worried about how much heat this thing is going to be putting out. This is in the coolest part of the house, and the door can be left open. If i just tossed a couple of fans in there for the plants and the light should i be ok?

Ambient Temps

IDK my man those lights get pretty hot it will depend on you ambient room temps I'm in a basement and the temps stay in the low 50's almost year round and still need an 8" inline booster fan for an outtake and a 6"inline for intake, I also use a 400w HPS. however my room is 5x5x6 and my temps range from 73.5F-78.0F...........

Whats the ambient temp in your room?

what about the odor going out the window, you would prolly be better off spending $100 and getting some inline booster fans id say an 8" and a 6" make an intake and an outtake, use 8 to 6 inch reducers and 6" ducting and you'll be golden.. you can build a four sided frame out of plyboard and mount it over the window seal it with caulk and mount it over the open window. cut a 6" hole in the back of the board and vent out of it through your 8" fan and a carbon filter.

watch this for a better explanation of what I'm talking about

right now smell is of no concern, all im worried about is the heat.
with a few fans and the ac running should that be enough to combat the heat of the 400watt hps?
