Cooling a 400w HPS closet and keeping the smell in

New grower here and have been reading very extensively for a little while. I just recently received a 400w HPS in the mail from HTG Supply and set it up. I was using CFLs up until then and the temperature was just fine in my closet, but now the HPS is generating lots and lots of heat. I have 2 fans blowing in the closet but that doesn't really seem to do the trick as I saw the temperature at 90F when I opened the door and checked it today. Its okay when I open the door when I'm there and is around 70, but when I'm not there I like to keep it shut except that it just gets too hot. How can I resolve this issue? What can I buy or make to cool the closet? What works best? What is the cheap way to do it and what is an expensive way to do it? Do portable ACs work for a situation like this? Hopefully I can just put something in my closet to do the trick, I'm really hoping I don't have to modify the closet door or anything.

Also, is there a way to keep the smell inside the closet if I have the doors shut? Will putting something around the door cracks keep the smell inside the closet? Whats the best way and/or easy way to keep it odorless inside a closet? Carbon filters seem to work great, except my attic isn't located above my closet and a window is too far away to run it to unless I've been completely misinterpreting how they work.

You want one exhaust one intake fan not 2 blowing in. Carbon scrubbers will keep the smell down. you could also buy a cool tube, i beleive HTG has them. ill grab some tutorials on scrubbers...

Do you have actual intake and exhaust holes? Or just two fans blowing the air around inside the closet? You need fresh air intake and hot air exhaust.

No, there aren't any intake/exhaust holes at all. How would I go about adding them in a closet without a attic top or modifying the doors? I basically just have 2 fans blowing the air around in the closet. What does fresh air intake and hot air exhaust require and how does it work?

Takes at least two holes. You need a way for cooler fresh air to get in there, not only for heat management but first and foremost because the plants need it. You then need a way for hot air to escape, usually fan-driven, and you can put a filter on that to control odor.

This is one of the biggest problems with a closet grow.

Punch holes that you can repair later, or else you can buy a cheap door that fits the closet, cut holes in it, put it on the hinges for your grow and then replace with the original door later.

That looks like something designed specifically to electricute someone oh man, look up a DIY cooltube online, I made one for like 30$.. It was the cheapest and best invesment i put into my closet... I had temps flying everywhere, but this cooltube keeps everything nice and temperate. I could probably put my 400w HPS about 3 in. away cooltube and all and not have any heat strress. I dont know if the light that close to the plant is healthy.... but i know it wouldnt be hot enough to burn the plant at all.

Heres a pic of mine in my growing closet, I got the cyclone tube at hobby lobby, its 6 inches in diameter to fit the HPS bulb inside nicely, Then i got some 6in. alluminum duct fittings, foil tape, heat resistant foam tape (for seeling the gglass tube to the duct pieces), some "L" shaped brackets to mount light socket to inside of duct, and some aluminum ducting (the paper kind that u can flex around). After u put it all together u hook up the flexible heat resistant ducting to the end of cooltube w/ the socket mount, leaving an open end to intake air. Connect the other end of ducting to a 6in. inline booster fan (u can get it on ebay for 30$), mount the fan in the wall pointing out. Turn it all on and ur fan will blow all the hot air that is produced by ur HID that is collected in the cooltube.

Heat no more. If u want to make one, lemme know and ill be a lil more specific w/ how it all assembled.

Yea man, let me know the specifics. I need to get one and spending $300 isn't gonna happen.

i have the same prob with heat in my closet...but wouldnt cutting holes in the door defeat the purpose of keeping it closed? wouldnt it make it just as obvious?
