Ima wing it!

Well, I've finally decided that I'm going to take my chances at growing this spring/summer. I'm going to start with just one seed for now. I think I'm going to start the germination process tonight with a couple seeds out of my bag. I know, I don't got the dankest of the dank, but it's all good. It's my first grow, so I don't think I need to go out and buy smoe badass seeds from a bank or anything. I read the germination sticky and I think I got it from there. I just got a couple questions:

1. How big should I let it get in the party cup before I transplant it to a bucket?

2. How big should I let it get in the bucket until I transplant it into my field outside?

3. Self watering tips/tricks?

Thanks guys, I hope this works.

I wouldn't start germinating tonight. It only takes about 1-7 days to fully germ it and by the sounds of it your growing outside and most places start growing in late April and early may.

you should plant your seedling in a 5 gal bucket...then you won't need to re-transplant and you can move it if you need to...i cut up little pieces of sponge and put in soil to hold extra water...gl.

i would for sure just start in the bucket, and just cut out the party cup.
if its just out in your field i wouldnt worry about self watering, cannabis plants like t get good and dry between waterings and feedings, be sure to use a nice airy medium, and get something with absolotuley no pre added nutes.

While the advise to germinate your seed in a 5 gallon bucket is not completely without merit, I would never waste the resources (bucket, soil, etc.) on an unproven bean. While almost all of my growing experience is limited to having grown ONE seed, I have propagated that one plant into a continuous harvest of MJ.

The advantage to using a small container for small plants, cuttings, or even seed is that you don't need a lot of dirt, You don't need a lot of space, and you have MUCH more control of the conditions in the cup. Ideally, you would water thoroughly and then allow the soil to dry between watering. A tiny li'l plant has a tiny li'l root structure and can not use all of the moisture in the soil if it is in a big ol' 5 gallon pot. I believe you'll run the risk of rotting the roots a lot more easily in a big container opposed to a more reasonable sized one.

There is no secret, or magic, or voodoo when it comes to transplanting. I have never lost a plant when up-potting. That includes MJ as well as hundreds of tomatoe and pepper plants that I have started from seed. Just make sure you have a good rootball on the plant, and carefully turn the rootball out into your hand then place it into the hole you have prepared for it in the larger container. Press the soil firmly around the transplant and water in and all will be good. I do make sure that the soil is moist in the cup that has the transplant so that there is little chance of the rootball falling apart in my hand while tipping it out of its orginal cup.

Good luck. You realize that unless you're using feminized seeds, you have a 50-50 chance that the plant will be male right?
