1. my mom is too tall 2. does anyone SCROG their mom?

Short version:

My mother plant is too tall. Can I just cut the top off?
Is setting up SCROG for the mother plant an effective method?

Long version:

First timer. A few weeks ago I acquired a neglected plant. It was just a stick with a couple leaves on top. I repotted it into some FoxFarm soil, started feeding it Botanicare, and placed it under T5 fluoros - 6500k blue. It has responded very well. It's been like watching a snake shed its skin; the main stalk is bursting through the old skin. As it grows taller it is also filling in below. It is now approaching three feet tall and has side growth filling the upper half of the plant - 15+ side branches.

Now that I have a healthy plant I'm ready to get out the scissors. There are at least six good sites available for cloning with many more on the way. I need a shorter mother plant to accomodate my vegetative cabinet. I have about a six foot cabinet. I plan on having the mom on the lowest shelf, the newly rooted plants on the middle shelf, and the clones on the top shelf.

Can I just cut the top of the mom off anywhere? Will it affect the growth or health? I'm also wondering about setting up a new mother scrog style to tailor it the size of my cabinet, any opinions on this? Thank you.

If you plan on taking clones why scrog? Thats for isolating bud sites for more light. If it will be a mom and is getting too big you need to look into topping/fimming and at least LST.All are on the first sticky in this sec.Good job BTW nursing that thing.

it may be too late for him to lst... likely it is, it may end up damaging the plant

id say, just start taking clones, when you remove branches from the plant it wont grow upwards for a while, it will work on fixing itself first.

yes, take your cuttings and cut the mother plant down to the height you want.
she'll grow new growth from what you leave on her.

marijuana's an annual herb though, it doesn't live for years like a shrub does.
you might get one more set of cuttings off the mother plant but you'll soon be wanting to
replace her with one of the cuttings you're going to take.

So, you don't need to treat her like she's a god, cut her back to suite your needs.

Yeah, I used to scrog my mom all the time, but then we moved out of the trailer-park and it's not okay to do that anymore.

Just kidding!

When she gets too tall, take an extra clone to replace her.

just cut her down to size that suits you mate. dont be shy
mothers can last years if maintained properly ,my mothers are 2 & 3 years old & still producing healthy clones & final harvests.

ps; after chopin her dont take cuttings for at least a month give her time to recover.

hey that's interesting, I didn't know they could live three years!!
..I knew two years was possible but I thought that was the limit.

Must be good to be growing in England now it's class C.
Are people still fighting for legalization?

Yep,some ppl keep moms for 10 years or more and those are almost always in soil though.Depending on how many cuttings you take, you can do it each week if you dont take too many, its size dependent.Because most indoor grows are size restricted, replacing the mother with one of its clones will keep it small and allow the mom to be flowered to give some bonus yield.

continuation from starter

I have been reading threads about the SCROG method and I'm planing on giving it a try. My first set of clones were taken yesterday and we'll have to wait and see if they are willing participants. I tried a couple in soil and a couple in rockwool to see if either way works better for me. I'm hoping they grow like a weed.

As far as SCROGing my mom, I thought this could be a better use of space. My cabinet is about 2.5' wide by 1.5' deep and about 6' tall, it will only be used vegging and cloning. Right now my mom is starting to push the limits of the depth, taking up 3' of vertical space and leaving vacant much of the width. I'm wondering if mom's respond well to SCROG, thus allowing to me to use all the horizontal space and also put another shelf in the cabinet. Maybe the answer is a new mom trained to be short and bushy. It is all an open book to me right now, I'm just trying to develop some plans/plants.

BTW I don't know if anyone is looking for ideas, but I'm pretty happy with my cabinet. It is Workforce brand storage cabinet from Home Depot. It's decent quality made out of plastic and just snaps together. It sells for about $80. It comes with three shelves and after assembled it nearly light tight on 5 of 6 sides. The front is not light tight. I plan on sliding in some 1/8" particle board behind the doors and using weather stripping or something similar to seal it up. Sometime I'll search through the cabinet threads, maybe this is useful or maybe it's old news.

ok bud, yeh its ok in england but better in scotland

yeh the cause is still running but apart from medicinal (is it sativex?, some1 correct me if im wrong) marijuana i think over here the cause is futile.

but if legal goin2 the "DAM" would decrease and dont want that brother

peace.....................

Yes, if you care for and maintain a mother, it can last for decades!

Don't listen to lies from High Times (they claim that the genetics of the mother degrade over time and make the bud less potent), these claims are to help seed companies keep sales of their seeds and not have one time customers.
