If you have access to Home Depot or Lowe's then you may be able to find ProMix soil which works well.

The recipe I use is a mix of 60% pro-mix, 20% perlite, 15% worm castings, and 5% pre-mix, if you can get your hands on the ingredients, its well worth the investment.

6 parts pro-mix
2parts perlite
2parts earthworm castings
1tablespoon of powdered lime

do that and you are set. Just use teas to add nutes to the soil. Should be good for the first 3 weeks of growth.

I've been using Premier Spanghum peat moss from Menards (very cheap) & about 15% perlite. I use Fox Farm Nutes and distilled water. Here's proof that it works:

My opinion on the high priced soils is that they are bullshit. $20 for a little bag of dirt? Crazy! I fell for it at 1st, and it sucked. More trouble than it was worth. With the cheap peat, it's easier for me to control the nutes. The Jack Herer I grew is some of the best weed I've ever smoked. It was grown in cheap peat moss, using good water, minimal, organic nutes, and a TBS. of sucanat every other watering. 1000w HPS & MH, and alot of TLC.

Fox Farm is way more than a bag of dirt -- it has worm castings, bat guano, fish meal, and other very beneficial ingredients. 20fan, sorry to hear you had trouble with it. I think it is a good product but I don't use it for the same reason, it costs too much.

You have some good recipes here, I'll offer another that is sort of a poor man's fox farm:
40% organic potting soil mix with no added nutes
30% sphagnum moss
20% worm castings
10% perlite

Usually I throw in some clean sand as well (though that adds to more than 100%). You can tweak this as you wish -- add bat guano or fish emulsion, for example, or less moss if you have low pH (sphagnum moss has a low pH), or more perlite etc.

P.S. This time of year the selection of organic soil mixes will be very limited, even in the "big box" stores. Make a note to buy a bunch in the spring when it is available to stock up.
