How to determine if you have hard or soft water

I found this info about how to determine if you have hard or soft water. This will help you if your going to use GH nutrients when it comes to ordering the micro which comes either in a hard water or soft water solution. However you will need a TDS meter to check your water.

Hardness levels are:
  • Soft Water - less than 17 ppm
  • Slightly hard - 17 to 60 ppm
  • Moderately hard - 60 to 120 ppm
  • Hard - 120 to 170 ppm
  • Very Hard - 170 ppm and higher
You can find it at http://www.watersystems.co.nz/learn/hardwater.htm

Hope this helps

That means your either using RO or distilled water which has zero minerals in it.
What I read about using RO water is that you would have to add Ca/lMag and if you use GH nutrients you would by FloraMicro for soft water.

The best thing you could do is contact General Hydroponics by e-mail and ask them. I don't want to tell you the wrong thing because I don't deal with soft water. Other post I have read stated they add the Cal/Mag to their RO or distilled water because it has zero minerals.
I don't have the specs for the soft water FloraMicro so I don't know what it has in it exactly, you may not have to add anything. I know when I asked them if I switched to RO water using the hard water micro they told me I would have to add the Cal/Mag because the HW micro didn't have any. So maybe the softwater micro already has the Cal/Mag in it.

GH replys pretty quick and they can tell you exactly what you need to add to their nutrients.

Here's their e-mail
