Did ya rep the man for helpin ya? CFLs usually dont require a ballast but HIDs will,i think they regulate and control the voltage and start the HPS bulbs,i think.Tryin to help till JCJ is back which in my estimation will be before noon sat.

well more light is always better so maybe another 26-40w cfl, & id go with cfl's, since your grow space is small an HID would just get to hot, youll need cool white (6500k) for veg, & warm white (2700k) for flowering.

An electrical ballast (sometimes called control gear) is a device intended to limit the amount of current flowing in an electric circuit.
Ballasts vary greatly in complexity. They can be as simple as a series resistor as commonly used with small neon lamps. For higher-power installations, too much energy would be wasted in a resistive ballast, so alternatives are used that depend upon the reactance of inductors, capacitors, or both. Finally, ballasts can be as complex as the computerized, remote-controlled electronic ballasts used with fluorescent lamps.
Ballasts are most commonly needed when an electrical circuit or device presents a negative (differential) resistance to the supply. If such a device were connected to a constant-voltage power supply, it would draw an ever-increasing amount of current until it was destroyed or caused the power supply to fail. To prevent this, a ballast provides a positive resistance or reactance that limits the ultimate flow of current to an appropriate level. In this way, the 'ballast' provides for the proper operation of the negative resistance device. Examples of such negative-resistance devices are gas discharge tubes and lamps.
Ballasts can also be used simply to deliberately reduce the current flow in an ordinary, positive-resistance circuit. Prior to the advent of solid-state ignition, automobile ignition systems commonly included a ballast resistor to regulate the voltage applied to the ignition system.
An electronic lamp ballast uses solid state electronic circuitry to provide the proper starting and operating electrical condition to power one or more fluorescent lamps and more recently HID lamps. Electronic ballasts usually change the frequency of the power from the standard mains (e.g., 60 Hz in U.S.) frequency to 20,000 Hz or higher, substantially eliminating the stroboscopic effect of flicker (100 or 120 Hz, twice the line frequency) associated with fluorescent lighting (see photosensitive epilepsy). In addition, because more gas remains ionized in the arc stream, the lamps actually operate at about 9% higher efficiency above approximately 10 kHz. Lamp efficiency increases sharply to about 10 kHz and continues to improve until approximately 20 kHz. Because of the high frequency of operation, electronic ballasts are generally smaller, lighter, and more efficient (and thus run cooler) than line frequency magnetic ballasts.
In addition, the higher operating frequency means that it is often practical to use a capacitor as the current-limiting reactance rather than the inductor required at line frequencies. Capacitors tend to be much lower in loss than inductors, allowing them to more closely approach an "ideal reactance".
Electronic ballasts are often based on the SMPS topology, first rectifying the input power and then chopping it at a high frequency. Advanced electronic ballasts may allow dimming via pulse-width modulation and remote control and monitoring via networks such as LonWorks, DALI, DMX-512, DSI or simple analog control using a 0-10V DC brightness control signal.

its best to use the same soil all the way through the grow, & organic is your best bet. whats your budget, & can u buy online or just stores or both.

Got 5 single quart pots with 1" WW, got 5/5 from seed all are under a 4' 8 bulb T5 w/all 6500K bulbs. At this time i only have 4 lit because there tiny, there about 4"from the plants.Thats already 20,000 lumens and 216 watts.Would any changes help, any comments? It is about 80F. @ its hottest and 40-60RH with a fan blowing,RH and temp will change soon w/AC and humidifier(or can i veg succesfully with this RH)These will become moms in soil(if females).

My germ & seedling method

Soaking seeds in warm distilled @ PHed 5.6 h2o in the dark for 24hrs making sure their open before proceeding to the PT method for another 24hrs. till 1/8" taproot shows. Then plant in warm prewatered good soil the same depth as the seed is long taproot down with tweezers very carfully in the premade hole then cover lightly with soil and
cover with plastic wrap, using a heat mat warm with lights on 18/6 (for other plants and for when they pop) This is my system, can anyone see anything which needs improvement?First run got 5/5.

they should veg fine @ 40-60%, ive had troubles sometimes getting mine over 60%, & i can put my (or have my) t5ho light 1-2" away from them, i measured the temp of each bulb, & mine dont get over 98, though the bulbs are brighter in middle, & hotter at the ends. oh mine is about 1" tall.
