is the ignitor in the ballast or just on the diagram or both, if it is in the ballast is it wired up.

its hard to beleive that a mh ballast has a ignitor in it, unless its a conversion ballast

Is blowing a bulb the worst that can happen from trying this??? Im no electrician but it can't be THAT hard yeah??? As long as there isnt a chance Ill damage the ballast I think I AM goin to try. Ill take some pics tonight (if I have time) of the ballast before I do anything tho.


Oh yeah is an HPS better for veg then a T5?? the HPS is 400W with a flowering bulb in it. the T5 has Veg bulbs in it and Im not POSITIVE the wattage but its the 4 bulb 2 foot one. Should I have a few of my healthier "mother candidate" plants under the HPS for veg???

hps lighting is best used for flowering b/c of the color temp, the hps will put off more light than the t5 (also have 1, its 96w @ 8000lumens), but the t5 has the right color temp. try useing both if you can. some people use hps from start to finish, some use mh from start to finish. thats why there are 2 different grow lights, veg & flower. as for rewireing the ballast, i cant tell you whats the worst that can happen, ive never done this, but my guess is it would just blow the bulb.

Haven't even built the room yet. Gonna frame this weekend. Brother giving me 2 1000w lamps/shades/ballasts. Going to hit the local hydro shop for the rest. Starting my first grow without feminized seeds so im not the expert at sexing. Ive done bits of reading about it but id like to gain some credible brain power on the topic. Im topping and LST'n and starting 12/12 at the 4th leaf set. When should I try and see if its manly or not? What part of my plant and how much should I cover 12 on 12 off before i switch my lights? Black trashbag w/ holes or paperbag colored black? Im assuming wire ties?

Im diggin the co2 techniques youve mentioned ive used a few myself. Im goin with the yeast buckett on this grow.

blowing the bulb is the worst that can happen, but im sure you wont!
& the 400 HPS is definately better then a fluoro by far!

The ignitor is outside the ballast, wired by me. The kit came not wired.

depending on your temps, that exaust fan should work, but you do want an intake fan as well, u want exaust going out high, & intake in low. cooltubes are really meant for small grow areas w/ little or no ventilation. no the bulb & ballast have to match or BOOM. i dont know your grow space, but i like to grow fewer bigger plants vs lost of small ones. im not surwe you can do DWC w/ soil. i never use anything smaller than 3gal pots, the rule is 1gal per ft of plant, ex:3ft plant = 3gal pot.

an easy way to sex would be to clone it, then put the clone under 12/12, then when it shows its sex, youll know the sex of your plant, ive never tryed your idea, but ide just use a black bag & cover a well developed side branch, poke a few holes in the top of bag, & take it off everyday to let it breath, just for a few minutes in dark

hey jcj77d, i really appreciate what uve done here, great resource of info on the how-to's to start everything. I had a question/concern.... im looking for a growing system/setup which takes up as little space as possible, very well kept from being found (smell etc), and yields enough for personal use. i kinda understand the germination step, but i cant seem to decide on a specific system to grow them with... im not sure if i can make a fan on the wall to circulate the air n etc... for various reasons i will be living in an aparment for the next few years with not so much space, very limited, so i wanted some advise. any suggestions? thanks again man,

The space I'd like to use is 6ftx10ftx6 ft high. I could make it bigger if needed as I have my whole basement if needed but want to keep it hidden in the corner more natural looking incase the inlaws or fam drops by. The DWC I was refering to was hydro/ bubbler bucket. I think with my height limits I'll stick with what you said and use 3-5 gal pots.

what size area are u planning on growing in, & your buget. so your looking for a stelth grow? if u can build your own. gime me some of your ideas & ill get back at u.
