not too important I know but u might want to edit.

PS about the ballast wiring info, it doesnt seem to really say how to wire an HPS ballast to make it work with an MH bulb. When it gets to wiring for MH it says if ur ballast has the HPS components just wire it as an HPS, right??? I dont think this will solve my problem. Can u elaborate?? this is what the info u gave me says . . . . .

Metal Halide (MH)
If you want a metal halide light, your task is even easier because now you only have the transformer and capacitor to work with and no ignitor. This is for standard metal halide ballasts. On occasion, you run into a MH ballast which has an ignitor. Try not to get this kind if you can. If this is the only option, then follow the instructions for HPS ballasts
this is about all i know about ballast, they are all different in some way, so its hard to help w/o it being in front of me. try asking this in the advanced growing section, or yo suspect can you answer this. or try searching for hid ballast kits online to see if u can find diagrams

Would that just get rid of the smell or would it get rid of it and add it's own?

all I know is that on my 1ooo watt hps ballast I disconnect 1 wire from the igniter. it has the number 3oo on it and its the same color as the wire its attatched to. Just disconnect and cap off both wires for MH, and reconnect for HPS.
Although your ballast is a 4oo watt it should still consist of the same components as a 1ooo watt just be sure to unplug it when messin wit da wires. test it out, keep an eye on temp of bulb, cause they can burn hot and blow if left enchecked........and when I say blow, I just mean your bulb wont work anymore.
Peace!

well the air freshiners just help w/ the smell, but when i used the unsalted garlic powder all i smelt was garlic (strong) unless i was right by the plants or if i was moving them around or something. personally w/ just 4 plants now, i think the air freshiners work fine, but then again i really dont have to worry bout smell, i just use them to keep my house from smelling, but its my house so im not that concerned about smell.

grow room

I am just getting started and am researching before buying or building my room. I have a 9ft x 6ft space to work with. The room is only 6ft high. Have a friend who has 2 1000w hps that he will give me on trade or should I go with 3 600w. Will be growing in soil. But still not sure weather to build tables low to the ground or use pots. What would you do with this space? How many plants can I fit in here? Any help would be awesome!

I dont know how jcj does it, but I say fill it with 6" pots.
9'x6'=216 plants. with both of those 1000 watt hps burning!

Do you think heat will be an issue? Should I consider buying air cooled shades?

so what Im getting is that all u have to do to convert an hps ballast to an mh ballast is just disconnect the igniter. which makes sense because the igniter is the only part of an hps ballast that's different than a metal halide right??? So I see there are 3 wires going to the igniter usually marked something like 1,2, and 3. and you say that u disconnect 3 to convert from hps to mh right? which I am thinking just disables the igniter. Im wondering if it HAS to be wire 3 - have u tried the other wires?? and where did u learn this conversion method just from a friend??? forgive me if u've already said. Oh and is having the bulb explode the worst thing that can happen from trying this??? is there any risk of damaging the ballast????

PS THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL THE INFO HARD TO FIND ANYTHING ON THE NET ABOUT THIS !!!!!!!!!

I got 150W ballast for my MH. The diagram on the ballast sais "diagram for MH/HPS". So I'm guessing this ballast is ok for an HPS right? I'm planning to get an HPS from a different place then where I got the MH, hope it will fit

the 1st thing i see is a height problem, if u use the 1000w bulbs, youll have less growth height b/c a 1000w has to be kept further away from plants vs the 600w b/c of the bulb heat. since your height is limited, id just put them on the floor in @ least 8" or 1gal pots (rule of thumb is 1gal pot per ft of heigth ex: 3ft plant = 3gal pot). what are you going to grow, & what are you looking for, alot of little plants w/ ok yeilds, or a bunch of big plants w/ big yeilds. if it was me, id try to grow fewer bigger plants, b/c there is less to deal with and keep track of & less work.

it wont work, b/c a mh ballast doesnt contain an ignitor, which an hps ballast needs to work.
