As plant lines are bred to themselves, the plants can lose some of their vitality or vigor. This results from the genetic makeup becoming more homogeneous as siblings are bred to each other or progeny are backcrossed to parents. When two such lines are crossed, they produce a hybrid that will exhibit "hybrid vigor." Once a desirable hybrid is created, it is possible to take cuttings from it and its clone progeny repeatedly without loss of vigor. It is at this point that you may wish to create feminized seed. These F1 hybrids will be used for planting in gardens, rather than for breeding. With feminized seeds, the grower knows that every plant is female. The seeds are produced using pollen from male flowers which had been induced to grow on female plants. None of the pollen contains male genetics so they grow only into female plants.

There are a number of other ways to create feminized seed. These include using chemicals such as aspirin and hormones such as gibberellic acid. However, it is easier to breed females to females using chemically-induced or stress-induced male flowers that produce pollen on female plants (forced hermaphrodites).

One drawback is that plants that are induced to produce male flowers may have a slightly higher proclivity toward hermaphroditism than the general population. Using them for breeding may be inadvertently selecting for hermaphroditism. So after five or six generations, some of the plants might have more of a tendency towards hermaphroditism. But there is little chance that plants grown from first-generation feminized seed will become hermaphroditic, so they are ideal for using in the garden.

During the 1960's and 1970's some cannabis breeders took to experimenting with Colchicine. Colchicine, a powerful mutagen for both man and beast, stops cell duplication, while the cellcore duplication continues the same. The end result is a doubling or more of the chromosome set. This treatment can be beneficial to cannabis because it enforces many properties such as higher production of thc and resistance to disease. What also resulted, when gender chromosomes doubled, is that male or female chromosomes appear manifold, called Hermaphrodites. What's the plant to become? It becomes all at once. The result is called feminized or effeminate seed.
Genetically, a cannabis plant is more or less predisposed to become male or female. This is regulated by 2 chromosomes everyone knows as the X and Y chromosomes. A plant with 2 XX chromosomes becomes female. A plant with an X and Y turns into a male. Plants have hormones that regulate it's functioning, of which gender is one of those functions. The hormone balance is genetically determined, and partly influenced by environmental factors. An example is when plant roots get damaged. The roots will produce a substance that in turn slows down leaf growth. The result is male flowers. When discussing hormone balance you get FEMALE SEED: a female is a plant with XX or only female chromosomes.
When you have a seed with just X chromosomes, you are certain this seed will grow into a plant that is genetically female. To achieve the XX only plant: a female plant is forced by a hormone called Gibberellic Acid to produce male flowers, the pollen created contains only X chromosomes, when you offer this pollen to another female plant you can be absolutely certain to get seeds which are 100% XX. Once again this seed is called FEMALE SEED. Gibberellic Acid can be found in online. It takes years for an individual to achieve the proper plant hormone manipulation to get 100% female XX seed. Supplies therefore fluctuate and there are many different strains available worldwide.

  2. Great info.

    Thanks!

  3. no prob.

  4. It sounds like they are saying that if a manufacturer takes the time to create true feminized seeds they can be dependable. But we don't usually know what processes a breeder uses to make their seeds, what results they claim we can expect, or what the general results most of us growers have with feminised seeds. We should start a thread with a sticky that lets everyone give information about their results with feminized seeds.

  5. i was about to read that article, until the image loaded and i saw what book it was from! GREAT source. JK is an awesome author who really knows his shit. everyone needs these books, especially the 3rd, which this article is from. good job!

  6. yea i love his books, got all 3, he really knows his shit.

  7. Which books are you talking about?

  8. ok so i contacted www.amsterdammarijuanaseeds.com , to ask them if they sold feminized seeds, b/c this is where i placed my last order from, & their responce was:
    Hello !

We do not sell feminised seeds in the first place because they are 2 expensive and in the second place actually most important these
    seeds are not 100% female!!

    And:genetic manipulated!!

All professional growers in Holland use them seeds who got males and females they will give you more healthy plants!!
You separate the males from the females yourselve!!Go to:

    http://www.amsterdammarijuanaseedba...juana-info/difference-male-female-plants.html

    http://www.allpotseeds.com/male-female-plant-differences-how-to.html

    to check the difference!

Probability of at least 1 female plant:

    1 seed: 50%
    2 seed: 75%
    3 seed: 87.5%
    4 seed: 93.75%
    5 seed: 96.875%
    6 seed: 98.43%

  9. very interesting stuff! I've used feminised 3 years in a row and I got all female and the smoke was not bland at all.
Great thread though, I'm interested in what everybody else thinks.

  10. Who's JK???

  11. Author & a huge cannabis Connaisseur & activist, named Jason King

  12. The Cannabible, there are 3 of them, not talking about the cannabis grow bible, by greg green.

  13. :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Okay, I looked at the site and it says this:
Because of the many requests we added :

    -White Widow feminized seeds
    -Waikiki Queen feminized seeds
    -California Dream feminized seeds
    -Afghani feminized seeds
    -Bob Marley Sativa feminized seeds
    -White Queen feminized seeds
-New York City Diesel feminized seeds
    -Strawberry Ice feminized seeds

    to our marijuana seeds catalogue.

ALL OTHER SEEDS ARE NOT FEMINIZED
Note that we have most of the feminized seeds in regular seeds as well. Only the strains witch have "feminized" after there name are feminized.

Regular seeds give male and female plants. You have to separate the males from the females yourself.
With feminized seeds you'll only have female plants.

THIS IS COPIED DIRECTLY FROM THE WEBSITE. what are you talking about? can you give a direct link to who told you that?

  14. interesting. jcj quote "1 seed: 50%
    2 seed: 75%
    3 seed: 87.5%
    4 seed: 93.75%
    5 seed: 96.875%
    6 seed: 98.43%"

    neat. didnt know that.

  15. didn't notice the 07 whoops - thats what I get for getting lost in these damn forums!!! I keep reading and reading and reading and pretty soon I forget what I was posting where and why!! DOH!!

  16. Just add up the number of combinations, and only 1 of those combinations will be all male. For example, 2 seeds gives 4 combinations:

    FF
    FM
    MF
    MM

3 out of 4 combinations result in at least one female, 3/4 = 75%. For 3 seeds there are 8 combinations, 7/8 = 87.5%, and so on. There always is only one combination that is all male, every combination but that one results in at least one female.
