few questions for first time grow

I am a first time grower from as coastal region with a mediterranean climate. I am growing outdoors. I have a few questions...

1. Is it normal for the cotyledons (the first, round leaves) to turn yellow and fall off?
2. At what height should I consider transplanting them from 4" diameter clay pots to their permanent homes in 7 gallon pots?

1.Yeah when the cotyledon leafs yellow and beging to fall off its a good indication for you to begin feeding nutes at low levels. Completely normal and neccessary. Those leafs contained enough food to sustain the plant for the first few weeks, now its your turn.

2. I usually waited untill the plants were 6-8" to transfer. At this point I knew that they had a strong root structure and would be ok spreading out. But theres no exact science to this, its just how well you know your plants.

great answer dirtyape! you just need to have a good root system. If the roots start poking out the bottom of your pots them transplant them to bigger pots.
