personally i would not want risk growing in someone elses dwelling. too many factors and too much to lose. i would do it outside somewhere or wait until you have a more suitable option.
i have never rented a house but have had maint and the landlord come in while i was not home in several apts i had. basically you know you are taking risks growing in an apt as you said with the smell and being discovered. its up to you whether you deem it a worthwhile venture. good luck

it is illegal for any person (maintenence or landlord) to come in your apartment without giving u atleast a 24 hour notice. Atleast thats how it is in VA. I grow in my apartment, and if ever caught, i would win on a technicality.

yes well it happens and for instance if there was a pipe burst in the building or a smell coming from your apt they would not call around looking for you they would come in. but i agree you are correct it is not legal for them to just come in to your dwelling without prior notification but it still happens. just know that it could happen

Like the man said, here in Va owners have to give renters advance notice (emergencies excepted). But yes, you have to let them in. And they don't need to have a reason (general inspection is good enough), unlike the cops. So...my advice is, if you're going to grow in a rental, make sure your plants are reasonably portable on short notice.

now renting a house thats the best. common sense, the more secluded the better. those homes are hard to find though. ive found that if you have a grow operation in the ghetto, it tends to not raise too much suspicion. just my thoughts though. find a house that has those fan blowing on top of the roof, its like a circle shape fan always moving. a house that has one of those would have a compartment in one of the rooms to get to it and usually its pretty close to that vent. living in oakland people are more afraid of getting killed than worrying about neighbors smoking marijuana. 150 homicides this year. |

i think you should be ok in either but remember to still be as shady as possible with your grow ,keep it small get the best odour controll possible and tell NO ONE .of course theres a chance of getting caught still as there is for anyone growing but that is the risk you take .

I agree that you raise the risk by growing in a rented property of any kind.
Between the two I would think that an apartment is riskier. In an apartment you are subject to more risk of entry from strangers -- you have neighbors on all sides so all it takes is one idiot upstairs to leave the tub on and your apartment is flooded and then the maintenance crew is coming in unannounced. Many apartments are professionally managed which means they have regular maintenance schedules for pest control, painting, HVAC, checking for leaks, etc. In the lease you could be agreeing to give this kind of maintenance unfettered access. Or, all they have to do is print one line on your bill or in the newsletter "safety inspections next month" and they have given you notice that you will forget about. A rented house, on the other hand, is not subject to intrusion from maintenance crews because of your neighbors' negligence. They tend to be managed by the owners who don't drop by as much. Whatever you do lock up your op good, and set it up away from appliances that might need maintenance or repair (like the hot water heater, a/c, etc.)

not everyone is as lucky as your tennants, spanish! i wish my landlord smoked!! i have to grow at my parents' house a few miles away. i'd have to recommend that where ever you choose to live, stay there a few months before you start your grow. get a feel for the place/neighbors. also look into getting a grow cab that looks like a piece of furniture, such as an armoir or welsh dresser. some companys sell stuff like that for that reason, i've seem them disguised as a small refridgerator. just be very cautious.

You rent from an out-of-town absentee owner who uses a realty company to rent the property. If you can hang it's better in the ghetto, no one will call the cops unless there is a shooting.
The beauty of rented property is that if you do get caught you don't lose your home to property seizure. A lot of the time it seems that's what the bust is about, getting property to sell to pay for police conventions and training sessions in Miami and Las Vegas.
