Harvesting

ok so my one plant is getting near its harvesting time now and i am considering taking some buds off and stuff. in fact ive already pinched a few as well as some leaves for a smoke now and then.
anyway, the question is: how long do i wait before a bud is mature? ive heard that the little hairs on the buds must be orangy/brown/red instead of white before i take them off and dry them, but just how orange exactly?

can anyone post a picture of a mature bud perhaps? i dont want to be harvesting immature grass and then not get the most i can out of it!

thanks guys.

But you already did!
Don't tell anyone else, just keep it between me and you, cuz you'll get stoned to death on here for committing the mortal sin of picking unripe buds, and I mean the stoned you get with rocks hurled at you, not dank weed.

Search the forum for "trichomes" and "mature" "amber" "cloudy" or "milky", words like that; I posted a nice image in a thread recently. I'd have to search to find it, which you can do; I know when to harvest (any day now! Wooh!)

Of course, it goes without saying that the previous sentence is also loaded with clues; i.e. examine the trichomes.

You had me round? Was that for dinner? Man! I musta been really out-there.

(reads last post again)

Yeah, kinda poetic, innit? Wasted, I am! No more than four noobs will ever see this slice of genius. Oh well, there's an infinite supply out there, waiting for us to tap in. Just as well, cuz I like to be too stoned to manage on my own.

i think i may have formulated myself wrong. the buds i pinched off were not exactly immature, just not 100% amber color, more like 50%-75% so. what i read from your threads is that if you prefer a cerebral high then thats not a problem at all, which is what i personally love.
the buds ive smoked have coincedentally given me such a high which has been great fun, i wasnt aware that this was because i picked them off earlier rather than later as the strain is sinsemilla anyway which is about as sativa as it gets.

100% amber is too late, unless you like a real couch-lock high.

Or are you talking about the hairs? Ignore the hairs. Look at the trichomes.

Sinsemilla means "without seeds". Any strain is sinsemilla if it is grown without pollination, and has no seeds.

hmm now im confused. i guess i really dont know much about growing after all. whats the difference between a trichome and a hair? all im talking about all the small hair type things that sprout around the bud.
at first they are white, but then they go amber....or am i looking at the wrong thing here?

Hairs are, in fact, those hair-looking things. Trichomes are the coating of crystals on the bud and leaves that are resin sacs containing THC and other cannabinoids and must be examined under magnification.

Well said. The sugary looking stuff on the bud and bud leaves.

Yes, of course.

I agree, wholeheartedly. However, the more I think about it, the more I'm compelled to consider that the reasons we do it are themselves flawed. This is why peeps get so worked up about it, even though they aren't entirely sure why they consider it so wrong.

I've considered this deeply, and here's what I conclude...

Every plant should be picked at the point of maximum ripeness. At any other time, you are loosing yields for no other reason that you are growing the wrong strain.

In other words, if you like the "up high" that you get from picking early, you need to grow a more Sativa dominant strain instead, and harvest it at peak maturity. You'll get a better yield for your effort, and exactly the high that suits you. I was ranting about this recently, here.

The only reason I can think of for harvesting at any time other than peak maturity, is that you are stuck growing a strain that doesn't suit you.

Buy some new beans!
