Help with lighting terminology

Hey,
First of all, this site is amazingly helpful and I've already learned most of the things I would ever want to know from it in just a few hours.
This is my first grow, and because of this I'm using CFLs (and fluorescent bars if I can find any that fit my description as follows..) to grow them.
My question is this:
What do you call the thing that the light bulb hooks into?!?! Besides a lamp. I've heard of socket, but that doesn't yield any results on home depots website and the like. It's really easy for me to find the lightbulbs, but what do I hook them into? Also, where can I find a FL bar that plugs in?
Thanks, be gentle.

ive gone to both wal mart and home depot and boughten goose neck clamp lamps. They work great and you can twist the lamp to get the light directed where you want it

Just walk in to the electrical department of Home Depot. Who cares what term they use (or don't) on their website?

thanks!

Clamp lamps sound perfect. Yeah, I guess they just don't really show that much on their website. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going crazy.

Also, can I fight any type of bulb into any lamp then? I suppose the wattage has to match up somehow..
And finally, I have heard of different types of FL for growing and vegging. What is the general concensus on this? And can you get perfect buds with FL or will they always be less dense? Thanks,
cfldorm

Agreed with above, their website is no good, gotta just go to the store.

When using fluros for vegetative you want a high K temperature like 6500 K. For flowering you want a lower K like 3200 K.

Read up on wiring and lamps alot, dont want to do anything too dangerous. Ive seen they have adapters that will make a CFL plug directly into a power bar.

Good luck.

Agreed. Either enlist the help of a friendly electrician, or do a lot of research.

Household electricity is no joke when you screw around with it. Poor wiring and setup can lead to a host of problems... so measure twice and cut once.

converter

is that what you guys do-convert the bars to plug-ins? I guess I'll just stick with a lot of CFLs for now. Also, how expensive are timers?

A few more lighting Qs:
I have a 1425 lumen CFL I received for free from an event at college, will this work for anything?
Also, since vegging and budding like different lumen lights, would it hurt to put both types on for both stages? Or would this negatively affect the plant?

Probably good as part of a mix of lights, but without knowing the spectrum can't advise what part of the grow this light would most benefit.

Vegging and flowering need different part of the light spectrum, not different lumens. Mixing spectrums on the plants for both stages would be very good for the plant, full spectrum lighting is best.
