Simply follow the instructions below and your well on your way to being a professional in Fimming and Topping.

Topping a Plant

1. Locate the very top of your plant and cut through the main stem just below the newest growth. This should be done after the 3rd or 4th leaf set but can be done at any time after the 3rd leaf set.

2. Shows Plant Top cut off and where the 2 new Branches that will form a "Y" in the main stem will grow from.

3. Shows the newly topped plant after 2 days of growth, notice the Y in the Stem Forming.

FIMMING A PLANT!

Fimming is actually no different that topping, what fimming does is virtually the exact same thing only your leaving part of the new growth. This only takes of part of the new growth and actually topping the very very new growth which is very hard to see.

What this ends up doing is making it seem as if your getting 4 new tops right next to eachother when its actually only 2 at the very top (like topping) but since it was cut so closely to the next newest set of fanleaves 2 branches which would have formed there anyways seems to make it look like there is 4 new tops.

This is how you go about doing this.

1. Locate the very top of the new growth

2. With a clean sterilized scissors, Fold the fan leafs over and cut approximately 80% of the new growth off the plant.

3. View from the top showing the Cut

4. View of the Cut section after 2 days growth, showing the 4 new growth shoots (branches)

Thats IT!!!! you should be well on your way to Topping and Fimming of your plants.

If you have any questions dont be afraid to ask.
what is the purpose of trimming topping? someone please explain. thanks

I just read this whole thread, and I hope I'm not asking a stupid question...

My first attempt at cabinet-growing one plant got me one decent cola (early picture in my avatar at left, it got bigger). I'd rather have more than one, obviously.

My second attempt is 12/12 from seed (same bagseed). I'm at around the 3rd/4th leaf set now, but the plants are still tiny, still in keg cups with FF/perlite, and are still on plain water. It's only been a week or two.

My Question:

Is it too early for fimming? Should I wait until they're bigger or older? When is a good time to start? After re-potting? After feeding begins? Since they're already in 12/12, I don't want to miss the opportunity for fimming, but I don't want to kill baby plants with too much stress either.

This thread is very helpful, BTW.

I believe you can top/fim them after the 3rd set no matter how big they are. I topped the one I got going now when it was only 5 inches in a Solo cup after about a week of vegging(started it late with two others) The two plants I vegged for a month that I didn't top both turned out to be males, but the liitle one I topped is a female now three weeks into flowering and its 10 inches tall with two main colas forming and lots of little bud sites.

i read this whole entire thread and this is wonderful. I am about 3 weeks into vegetation and my initial plan was to just top the plant, then LST.

BUT...

Since Dierwolf is the motha fuckin' man....

He said you can TOP ANNNNNNNND FIM on ONE plant.

Now, what I dont get is this, if I TOP then cola, and then I form 2 colas, how in the hell would you FIM after?

DO YOU FIM ON EACH regrown COLAS?? How long after?

I get both TOP and FIM just fine, but when DIERWOLF(BTW, is the motha' fuckin' man!) says he does BOTH, how is that achieved??

My notes: Top usually after 3 stems are formed, 1 month after veg, about 10-12'' tall..

Fim: Cut the TOP of the main cola along with the two small leaves but NOT ALL of the 2 small leaves.

BUT ADDING BOTH TOGETHER. THAT'S TUFF. Call me stupid or whatever but mama always said STUPID IS, IS WHAT STUPID DOES!

Ok lets say you topped your plant once. The plant would now grow a new stem so to speak out of the "top" of the plant, hence the name" topping." So if you topped it once you would end up with two separate branches instaed of one, which would equal more flower development. It also keeps the plant shorter. Any help?

#1 Is it possible to FIM and do LST at the same time?

#2 Once I FIM, can I repeat it on the next four growths after they reach a certain height and grow out?
