well first off it creates another "shoot" so instead of having 1 shoot u got 2 so thats twice as many bud sits... second off it slows vert growth (just a few days) therefore allowing some side branches to catch up with the tops, if you manage to get them even with the tops they become a top so now u have more colas, Read up on lst too it will help, I hope that helps man...
