Nirvana Master Kush and Jock Horror grow

Using the bubble-bucket method with a 400w HPS and 7-42w CFLs as needed in an area approximately 5 ftx2ft. I plan to have 4 plants per bubble bucket(4 buckets), each bucket is a 1' 4" wide and 2' long. I planned to have 16 out of 20 go into the bubble bucket and then upon flowering having the # of females somewhere around 8, give or take 3. I planted ten seeds of each strain in moist soil in a styrofoam cup. I then put the ten master kush in one of the soon to be bubble bucket tubs and put 2 CFls over it. I planted the seeds relatively deep that I don't think the light affected germination. I did the same thing for the jock horror. I then put some tap water i had let sit out for two days into the bottom of the tub, after putting holes in the bottom of all the cups. I put just enough water to reach the holes so it wouldnt soak the soil just keep it moist. After 4 days all but 5 seeds had sprouted. After 6 days all but one had sprouted completely, I dug up the unsprouted seed and it had not even broken through the shell, and considering 19/20 seed germination is good enough for what I want, I took that seed out. Fortunately the holes I cut in the lids of the buckets were the perfect size for the CFL's to sit 4-6 inches over the cups and give off enough heat to make it 85-90 in the tub, and with two of the holes in the top open it seemed to be a very nice environment.

Right now it is 9 days since planting and about 4 from sprouting, and i've got 19 seedlings at an inch and a half to 3 inches tall. I have only grown once before and it was sort of a trial and error thing from the beginning. I just wanted to get some information and experience with growing before putting a lot of money into it. I did my homework, and got decent bud, it was a little stringy because it was solely done with CFLs and had poor ventilation b/c of it being in a college apartment complex, security was an issue. This time we are spending a bit more money and would like to make it count. With all the reading i've done, the main part of a grow that I have trouble with is this time now, the seedling stage. I want to make sure I do this properly so I need advice on what situation I should have my plants in right now.

Currently I have let the water dry out in the bottom and removed the lids and hung the lights at approximately 6 inches above the top of the plants. It is only 3-5 days into the plants sprouting, so should I stick with just the two CFLs, or should I switch on the HPS and lower it down to 18" or so from the tops of the seedlings? Should I keep the lid on with the CFL's resting on it to keep the humidity up, or is it ok at the 50-60% level that it is in room? What should my watering schedule be? Should I continue to fill the tub with a small amount of water or should I now start watering each cup individually after checking the soil. After about how many nodes have emerged should I begin fertilizing? I intend to get general hydroponics nutrients for the bubble bucket, but how should I go about fertilizing during the plants' time in the soil. My intention was to move the plants into hydroton after about 3-5 nodes had grown and the plant was about 6 inches tall. It is crucial to treat the plants right before they go into the bubble bucket, so please any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. If you need any more information to give informed advice, please ask.

Sounds like a good grow.

1st, 9 days since planted and they are 19" long?! How far away are your lights?
After about a week of growth, put the CFL's about 1 1/2 inch from top of plants. They put out little to zero heat.
Switch to HPS when you want to flower, veg. with those 7 CFL's
Fert after the 1st week of Flowering. DO NOT during veg. it will burn your plants, turn leaves yellow, brown, cause spots. Possible death

Im not too familiar with your growing method (i use soil) so somebody else can prob. give you better response with those questions

Good luck!

they aren't 19 inches tall, if they were 19 inches tall I'd think I had some freak weed. They are only an inch and a half to two inches tall, at most 3 inches.

thanks for the advice on fertilizing

I thought this is a bubble bucket grow, If so you better add ferts to your water or they'll starve. Oh, and get a philps MH conversion bulb you see a world of dif in your grow. By the way do you have a PPM meter and PH meter? if you don't you need to get them.

it is a bubble bucket grow but i'm starting the seedlings off in soil until they get a decent root mass that i'll feel more comfortable about moving them into the hydroton of the bubble bucket.

The conversion MH bulb, does that work with an HPS ballast and fixture, and how much does a decent one cost?

I'll have the nutes and the EC/PH meter in about a week, just need some time to raise the necessary 200 bucks combined for both, but I realize the importance of the EC/PH meter in this style setup.

dude, you can get both the PH and the EC/PPM meter for under a $100 on ebay.

Here is link to ebay PH meter and PPM meter.

are those adequate PH and PPM meters? I had heard that its better to get a nice combo one for about 100-120, but if those will do the job properly then its hard to argue with 50 bucks for both. Also, I got an agrostar 400w HPS, not sure if the agrostar part would matter at all with the MH conversion bulb capability.

what kind of nutrients would you suggest for the bubble bucket. Is general hydroponics good? bad? mediocre? They are what I intend to buy, and I need to get them in about a week, so any information on nutes would be helpful.

thanks

I use the PH meter and I have a wizard control ppm meter, its about the same cost and they work just fine. Just check them every week and adjust them when needed. GH is a good product, I use there flora nova(because it is organic based) and floralicious in mine with a bloom boost at week 5-6 of flowering. Oh, and I have some blood meal that I use for additional N.

Now half of the plants have yellowing leaves. I water like once every 2-3 days, but since i forgot to put the epsom salts in and a few had discolorations that looked like it could have been MG deficiencies, i did a half watering with the epsom salts just a day after I had watered normally, and now two days later half the plants have yellowing leaves. Any advice?
