The Smell

I was wondering how bad does a few growing plants really smell? Me and my girlfriend were thinking about growing in her house. She lives in a 2-flat that her mother owns. They live on the ground level, and no one lives upstairs, no one ever goes upstairs, and they are not planning on ever renting it out. Upstairs there is a small hidden room, big enough to grow a few plants. The room is accessed by removing a small piece of the wall, when covered the room is compleatly closed in.

Just a few Questions, How bad will the smell be? Will you be able to smell it all over the house? All over the 2nd floor? Or just near the area where the plants are being grown?

Outside of smell, how difficult is it go grow some quality buds? I've heard from people I know that growing indoors is very difficult to actually produce a healthy plant.

imho growing indoors is easier than growing outdoor with a lot less risks - insects / other predators / thieves / busts / adverse weather etc....
Smell is easy to take care of with decent carbon filters & a few room deodorisers for when u open the doors for maintenance etc...
Few Q's tho - who pays the electric bill? Is it a separate meter?
Cos they will notice an increase in the consumption.
Noise? Will they notice the buzzing of fans & ballasts etc if they live below?
It can get quite annoying - especially if u have wooden floors....

Other than that - why not!! Go for it!!!

without some serious odor control some strains could easily stink up a whole house and you could probably smell it outside. others have very little odor at all. like Num said, growing indoors isn't hard. just put in a little research time and you'll be set. one thing to consider, you could get her parents in a shitload of trouble if god forbid the authorities found it. not that you should get caught if you are smart about it but the risk is there.

Is there a site that does a GOOD job at discussing the details of each strain? I also can't find too much on which strains smell pungent and which do not.

Here is an archived version of the old overgrow strain guide. http://www.hanflexikon.de/ From personal experience, Northern Lights is the lowest odor strain I've tried so far.

All pot stinks during flowering. You can get strains that stink less, but in the end it all stinks good.

Your whole top floor will stink probably. You said the room or space in within a wall or something. How re you going to vent if the room is completely sealed...???

Odor does vary by strain but it really comes down to the individual phenotype of each plant. I agree that NL usually is among one of the lowest odor plants. Stay away from any Skunk strains, it didn't get that name for nothing. You will need to control airflow with good ventilation and possibly a carbon scrubber to control odor.
