yellow leaves on 12/12

I have 1 plant that is 8 inches tall and very healthy. mostly all nice dark green and nice color to it. Some of the newest leaves underneath the plant are a little lighter but in good shape. It has been under the lights 24/7. I decided to go ahead and go 12/12 and find out the sex. When i woke up this morning to put it back under the lights i noticed it has turned a more yellow color to the leaves and smelled stronger as well. It never even had a harsh scent to it just a sweet one. It smelled skunky this morning. Is it normal that the leaves get a yellow tint to the leaves after its first night in 12 hours of darkness? Please help me i sure dont want to kill it if it turns out to be a female especially. PEACE!!!

it needs more food by the sounds of it...its hard to say with out pics but thats what it sounds like to me..

1. underwatering (how often do you water?)
2. Root bound (how large is your pot?)

i water about every 3 days. Its in a 3 gallon pot about 10 11 inches deep. I thought maybe the yellow was due to the younger leaves not getting enough light since the adult leaves overshadow them. It seems that this plant wants to be a short bushier style plant. I notice that the soil on the top seems to dry out real quick about every day or every other day and the soil gets pretty hard sometimes. It dries up about 2 inches on the top of the soil but not as fast as the middle or the bottom. The pot has at least 6 holes in the bottom. After i water now i am starting to see white roots coming to the top of the soil. Any thoughts on all this??? Thanks for replying and help me the best you can till i can get some pictures up. I dont want to see her die. PEACE!!! p.s. I also forgot to mention i started using 10-10-10 to feed. I just bumped up to 15-30-15 today a little over half strength.

my soil on my plants dries well quick but it is only potting compost!
