I think he represents Fred's Murderous intentions and hatred towards his wife. The jealous/possesive side was probably Mr.Eddy (who we see is friends with the mystery man). I dont think either actually existed. The Mysteryman is the one who shows Fred the dirty truth as well.

Notice also that he only shows up before someone dies. I definately think he represents death.

edit: on second thought hatred might not be the right word to describe how Fred felt towards Rene.
