Is the dog showing conscience? Or does the dog know that someone's being aggressive towards him?
Say the dog was never caught and yelled at... Would you think that he'd have the same reaction for making the mess if he were never caught?
A person, on the other hand, would probably feel guilty for doing something they knew was wrong... Regardless of whether or not they were caught.
Animals run on instints... Not conscience.

but youve spent your whole life learning these things. if it was you making a huge mess with the garbage when you were about 5 years old, would you feel bad? no, not until your parents scolded you.
to bring up my dog again, he used to eat shoes all the time. i told him not to. no more eaten shoes.
once the animal knows it is wrong, it wont do it again.
i think you are mistaking our nonability to communicate directly with animals, thus leaving them ignorant in ourn world, for them not having a conscience.
(this thread sure went on a tangent, but the conversation is interesting enough...)
