5 gals of soil. I did a 2/3 soil, 1/3 vermiculite or perlite. Lots of trouble and messy though, thats one of biggest reasons I went hydro (there's nothing more fun then lugging around a 20lb bag of dirt). Light should be your BIGGEST concern, forget about ferts, soil, or anything else. You get some quality light and you WILL see the difference. Later dude
