Most of it depends on usage. If you smoke once a day, but its only a bowl or two, I wouldn't say that's abuse. After all, it's an American pastime to have a few beers after work, no? If you don't even use it everyday, it wouldn't be abuse at all unless you smoked a lot everyday for 6 days and took a break on one day. Abuse is hard to measure with marijuana because its negative effects are so subtle. We know that chronic tobacco use will lead to cancer and shit, and chronic drinking will lead to cirrhosis of the liver. For now, we will leave tobacco out of this because it isn't on the same level as alcohol. Also, heavy drinking will have a negative effect on other parts of your life as well; 95% of the time alcoholics end up losing their jobs and friends and shit at some point. Marijuana on the other hand is tougher to gauge. How harmful marijuana use is remains unclear, although most tokers and nontokers agree that it isn't good for you. "Abuse" is tough to define universally.

To me, however, I think that once it has a negative effect on your job and relationships, it's abuse. That's why I like to keep my smoking to weekends only, that way you can really enjoy it.

I do think that marijuana is far less dangerous than alcohol. I'd much rather be driven by a stoned person than even a mildly drunk one.
