thats is incorrect there are three current carrying conductors in a 240 volt receceptacle. There should be one black(hot) , one red(hot) ,a white(neutral) and a bare copper wire ( ground). the Red and black should be carrying 120 volts to ground each. if you were to go to your panel you would see the wires are actually connectted to deifferent sides of the busbar in your panel box, but the breaker connects them at the disconnect point(switch)
