The universe goes on forever, but the matter inside of it only occupies to much space. The matter all started out in one spot and exploded out in all directions at close to the speed of light. So you take the age of the universe, which is either 10 or 20 billion years, and double it. The universe is about 20 or 40 billion light years accross.
