If you have a fan sucking air into the closet, it'll take whatever else is in the air with it. You won't be able to prevent smoke penetrating the grow room just by changing the position of your intake. You'll have to change the
location (ie. another room, attic, crawl/similar space that does not share air with the smokey room.
If anything, you should be exhausting into your room, not in-taking from it. You also need some kind of intake/exhaust to work with the one you've got. You can't draw air out of or push air into a space that only has one hole. It's like a straw with a cap on one end.
