if i may give my input without being torched like you just did to trichy, leaving at least the tip of the stem submerged in the water is best. You can take it further by having most if not all submerged as long as it is oxygenated. The end being submerged allows the plant to draw water up through the stem even though the amount it can uptake is limited. This is very good for the plant since it doesn't have roots to collect the water.

I don't have scientific proof so to speak but I go to an aggricultural high school and half my day consists of classes revovling around plants. Hope this helps ya out
