Go for it!
Size is a preference of the grower. Knowing who's who before they go 12/12 is a nice bonus!! From what I have read here and elsewhere, if you don't want a monster, either top it now or bud it now would be my recommendation.
With that said, do what feels right to you. Growing is such a personal thing.
