I dunno... maybe you could tell the judge that the music was just too pure and beautiful to pay for.

I agree that it's the torrent sites that should be held to a much higher responsibility then the end users, since they are the ones profiting the most. But, if you are knowingly downloading copyrighted materials, then you should be prepared for the fact that you could possibly get caught and have to pay.

For the record, I'm not a musician, I'm a professional photographer. Last year, one of my photos ended up on the front page of a multi-million dollar corporation's website. It was pure luck that I actually found it, but I did. I won a pretty substantial settlement. Copyright laws are not something to fuck around with, just "because you can". They are real, actual laws that have pretty stiff penalties.
