i am to believe that any sort of "smoke" given off by holding a lighter to foil is actually given off by the lighter. Butane doesn't burn completely, which is why you get soot, which is what i imagine you're looking at.
you can put a hole in foil with a torch, though.
and yeah, there's nothing wrong with using non-coated aluminum for smoking.
