no regular lamp sockets are medium based, & HID's are bigger (mogule based), so it wont fit. & yes HID's require a ballast to power the bulbs. u will get buds if u flower w/ a MH system, but the buds will be leafy, fluffy, & sparce, vs an HPS, where the buds will be tight, dence & less leaf matter on them.
