If you are addicted and use heavily over a long period of time you will experience withdrawl symptoms including but not limited to depression (can be quite severe) and a general difficulty in regulating your emotions.
The act of smoking itself also has it's obvious negative effects. This can be avoided using vaporizers or cooking, etc. There are cleaner ways to smoke as well. Using a bong instead of rolling a joint for example. The water in the bong acts as a filter and can also cool the smoke before it enters your lungs. Next time you use one, check the water when you are done and you will see a lot of small black particles that would have otherwise gone into your lungs. I also try to remove the sticks and seeds before smoking because those do nothing but make for painful smoke.
