some factors that may lead you to believe it was simply weird bud:
if you have ever read hightimes im sure you have seen the ads for the bottles of liquid scent that you can drip on bud to make it smell however you want it to.
maybe they left a lemon in the jar
maybe the plant smelled like that but leaves dont reek when dry
you will probably not get high even if you smoked the entire sack in a hit to yourself and held it in. sorry holmes
