On the topic of scare devices.
I was thinking of something I have in my house that might work, you ever see those novelty items that when you walk by it, it sings a song? Like "Billy the Bass", if you walk by him he starts singing and moving "Take me to the river, put me in the water!" Its pretty funny the first 10 times you hear it then you take it and take the batteries because it annoys the hell out of you. If you could protect it from the weather somehow it would be effective to scare off a deer.
Downside though is if any human happened to walk by and set "Billy" off it would be sure to draw their attention.
