i would say dig about a 10-12 inches but use some good soil to fill the holes. fishing line would just hinder outdoor plants from reaching their full potential thats an indoor way of growing. if you would use fishing line I would use it to help hold up your plants when they get big. i dont know about the tick thing. look up the forum on sick plants they have a bunch of things that can infest your plants.
