I always add a healthy amount of Vermiculite. It seems to amend, and change the actual soil consistency because it is most often smaller more consistent grains than Perlite and make the mix fluffier and lighter. It also if applied to the lower portion of the soil layer does not swim up as much as Perlite can. The color of Vermiculite is light to dark brown similiar to soil, so it is not as visible in the great outdoors something to consider.
