Outdoors is by far better, the flavor, scent, high, everything is better. The only reason people want to make hydro out to be some magical system that makes mj 10x's more potent is so they get to get the biggest yields and do it quickly and easily then they lie and say it makes it better. Thats like saying you prefer McDonalds fish compared to something fished out of the lake right next to you, natraully.
The sun grows the best mj, just like its been doing for thousands of years, it's far more powerful than a HID light, and it has a perfect timer built right in, then the plant lives and breathes the flavor of the earth and it's environment. Hydro is usually just a ton of fucking nasty ass chemicals, unless done with organic nutes, but it still won't get the full flavor it should have and it won't take on a natural environment but instead to a fake one that just makes it bland because no matter where it's grown it taste the same.
I refuse to smoke hydro, unless it's organic and has been made into hashish, or baked into a treat.
