Think of ingested vs. smoked/tincture kinda like the long-acting vs. short-acting opiates. Smoked and tincture forms of cannabis behave more immediately and last for shorter amounts of time. Edibles take longer to start, but last longer.

Edibles are especially good for nighttime, for trouble with sleep.
Though, you can dose your edibles so that they work short term merely by eating smaller amounts at varying intervals.
Edibles seem to give one more widespread coverage for pain. Whereas smoked and tinctures are good for breakthrough pain (pain which occurs when the longer acting med is waning in strength).

Like with anything, inhaling a substance causes more immediate effect.
If you really wanna catch a caffeine kick, inhale the smoke from a coffee bean roaster! LOL
