The lava rocks are not bad to mix into the soil either (just break them up a little) I used to use them sometimes when I used 5 gallon pails with soil to improve drainage and aeration.
It is going to be hard to be bugless, being outdoors in a shed and all, but still, keep the cat out, they will almost always bring unwanted pests.
