After reading this entry from Wikipedia I'm inclined to try using a drop of olive oil. You could use WD40 or some other high-tech grease, but you might taste it if it drips into the bong.
When people refer to Glass on Glass, They mean there are no rubber parts, Everything is glass, You cant say that about a tube with a grommet. Even if there is glass on glass contact its not considered Glass on Glass, Cause it still relies on a rubber seal.
