Hey man, the stem has apparently got some disease which will have destroyed the xylem for sure, now the plant can't get any water up from the roots to its top, so the top will die.
Your ideas are pretty good, but I think making as many normal sized clones as you can will be your best bet. Use rooting hormone and a heat pad and you'll probably get them all to strike.
