I haven't measured my PPM once during flower and I use Lucas formula, its very clearly written out how much of what you mix into how much water. and if you never deviate from that you'll be fine.

If i had to chose between a PH meter and a PPM meter I'd go PH all day (and a good one too!)

A PPM meter is nice, I used it a bunch when i was starting out, but I don't think its necessary, I don't even know where mine is.

now, with that being said, if your NOT going to have a PPM meter you should at least get a sample of your water analyzed by your local water filter store ( the ones that do houses will normally do this for free) so you know what your base PPM is and what it contains.

for hydro, if your doing the "add back" method, you'll want a PPM meter, but if you just add water untill you've added back an amount equil to the original solution, then flush and refill, well you should be fine with out a PPM meter.

its really a good piece of mind, and like somoene mentioned, pretty cheap. I feel that you dont NEED it, but I think that you should have one, especialy when it comes time to trouble shoot a sick plant.
