I am new to this as well, but I do believe I read somewhere that 24/0 is slightly more stress on the plant than 18/6. However I have also read that 24/0 is a better way to start your veg cycle because the plants growth activity takes place during lights on and your plants grow faster. So who knows what the best answer is. 18/6 is more natural for the plant and 24/0 makes it work all the time. I am currently using a 22/2 light cycle. I want to give my plants a break and my lights a chance to cool down. Whatever you pick, try and stick with it, otherwise you will stress your plants. If you make any changes to the light cycle, be sure to do it gradually over a peroid of time.
I started out at 18/6 and slowly worked my way up over 3 weeks. This is how I think of it; people that leave their lights on 24/0, get 2 1/3 more days of light in a one week peroid of time. If you do the math you are losing out on 56 hours of light per week which translates into 56 hours of additional work for your plants. You have to find what works for you. I think 22/2 is a good balance for me right now. Maybe I'll even move to 23/1 at some point because then I think about the fact that I am losing out on 14 hours of light by giving up 2 hours for darkness! Haha.
